Frequently Asked Questions
Working While Studying
A general guideline is two to three hours of out-of-class work per credit hour each week. For a typical three-credit course, that means roughly six to nine hours of reading, assignments, discussion participation, and project work per week, in addition to scheduled class time. Most CalMU students take one or two courses per session, so plan for approximately 15 to 25 hours per week depending on your course load. Graduate-level courses and capstone or research-intensive courses may require additional time. Since CalMU's programs are designed for working professionals, courses are structured to be manageable alongside other commitments, but consistent weekly engagement is essential to success.
Absolutely! CalMU's programs are intentionally designed for working professionals, military members, and career-changers who can't put their lives on hold to earn a degree. Classes
typically meet once a week (afternoons, evenings, or Saturday mornings), and online coursework can be completed on your own schedule throughout the week. Most of our students work full-time while pursuing their degrees, and our flexible online and hybrid formats, eight-week sessions, and personalized academic advising make it possible to balance career, family, and education successfully.
Hybrid programs at CalMU typically include one in-person class session per week, (afternoons, evenings, or Saturday mornings) at our San Diego or San Jose location to accommodate working professionals. The remainder of your coursework is completed online through Moodle on your own schedule. This rhythm gives you consistent face-to-face engagement with faculty and classmates without disrupting your work or family commitments. Specific scheduling may vary by course and program, so your academic advisor can walk you through what to expect for your chosen degree.
Not at all. CalMU's online and hybrid students earn the same degree, learn from the same expert faculty, and have access to the same academic resources. Online courses are designed with the same rigor and learning outcomes as hybrid courses, and our technology-driven delivery model ensures online students remain fully engaged with their professors, classmates, and the broader CalMU community. Online students have access to live virtual office hours, discussion forums, group projects, our online library, 24/7 AI-powered tutoring, career services, and personalized academic advising. The choice between online and hybrid comes down to your lifestyle, location, and learning preferences, not the quality of your education.
