Private Caye Multi-Sport Retreat
With Expedition Style Sea Kayaks
-Kayaking, Yoga, Snorkeling and Paddleboarding-
Dates: Jan 19-26, 2013; Skill Level: Beginner to advanced
Overview: Similar to our Little Cay Sit on Top Multisport trip, but in this trip we partner with our friends at Uncommon Adventures for a more heavier sea kayak focus, and we use expedition style boats instead of sit-on tops. This is a combination trip of kayaking, snorkeling, SUP (paddleboading) and marine ecology. The highlight of this trip is basing out of our own private island (cay) surrounded by gorgeous coral reefs.
Logistics: You’ll fly into Roatan, Honduras, accessible via direct Saturday flights through Houston and Atlanta. From there, a local representative from Uncommon Adventures will pick you up and transfer you to a waiting high speed island dory for the crossing to Utila and our private island retreat at Little Caye. (We can assist you with flight bookings to be sure everything lines up properly for you.) Once on the Caye, we’ll get you settled into the quiet life off the grid and out of the fast lane. Pass that mojito over to the hammock, please…
Trip Leadership: This trip is co-led by Andi Shluker Ryon, (of Kayak Utila, Stand up Paddle Utila, ACA Sea Kayak Instructor, Yoga Instructor, and a marine naturalist) who is a 7+ year resident of Utila and by Michael Gray of Uncommon Adventures (ACA L-4 Instructor, WFR, ACA SUP), with multiple years of leading trips in the Bay Islands.
Andi is known for offering trips emphasizing marine education, safety, gaining a real skill set, and for her low key, patient attitude to be able to focus the activities on the individual person. You can see reviews of her trips here on Trip Advisor.
Michael is a well known kayak instructor in the states, excellent at teaching braces, strokes and rescues, and will offer workshops in these topics throughout the week. He is also known for his outdoor cooking skills, presenting at kayak symposiums throughout the year on cooking in the outdoors, and will be featuring tasty local style meals and also recipes from his recently published an outdoor cookbook!
Partnering with Uncommon Adventures out of the USA and Roatan, we operate this trip with expedition style, true “sea kayaks”. Uncommon Adventures is a USA based company which specializes in Coastal seakayaking and kayaking instruction, and has been leading sea kayaking trips in Roatan and the Cayos Cochinos for over 10 years. Uncommon Adventures has an excellent reputation for its skilled instructors and quality equipment. With Uncommon Adventures, we were the first and only group to bring this type of kayaking to Utila island and the Utila Cays.
In this trip option, we will be paddling in expedition style, cockpitted boats (not sit on tops) from Current Designs, Valley and Dagger. Experience is very helpful, but not mandatory. (If you want regular sit on tops, see our Sit on Top Multi sport Option, available throughout the winter) You can develop your kayaking skills with two American Canoe Association (ACA) -certified open-water kayak instructors throughout the week as you learn to handle a sea kayak in wind and waves. You can develop your kayaking skills with two American Canoe Association (ACA) certified open water kayak instructors throughout the week as you learn to handle a sea kayak in wind and waves. Being on a tropical island in the tradewinds does present some great opportunities for gentle paddling as well as rough water paddling without the dangers of cold water.
Snorkeling~The coral reef is easily accessible from the front doorstep of Little Cay, and we also have opportunites to paddle to additional snorkel spots. Your guides will accompany you on the snorkels as well as offer additional land based presentations to make the most out of your snorkeling time. We’ll teach you how to snorkel right out of your kayak on a fantastic living coral reef and also hone your free diving skills and marine ecology knowledge.
Stand up Paddleboard:
Michael is also an ACA SUP instructor, and Andi is the owner of Paddle Utila- the first to bring stand up paddleboards to the island of Utila and has introduced a wide range of clients to SUP in Utila’s waters. Between the two of them they will ensure you start off right and progress towards more advanced skills as well.
Yoga: Andi also brings her skills to the table as a Yoga instructor and will be teaching Vinyasa style classes (slow/gentle and a more stronger flow) as well as Restorative Yoga. As part of this trip we can offer daily yoga classes at either morning or sunset depending on the group.
Relaxing~ Little Cay offers plenty of opportunity and time to get in touch with island time, in a very real way. This may mean really taking the time to take in a sunset or sunrise, taking that hammock nap you’ve been looking forward to, or just spending extra time in the waters snorkeling out front.
With the variety of options and 2 companies working together to create this trip, this is a great value for a rare and unique opportunity for a trip that is limited to 6 participants.
Private Island Lodging: We basing out of our own private island (cay) at Little Cay, surrounded by gorgeous coral reefs, which offers us great access to snorkeling and paddling. Lodging at the Cay is in a 3 bedroom home- we can accommodate bedding to fit your group. The Cay is solar powered with limited electricity, but we’ll have running water and lights as well as a full kitchen. The home is comfortable, but semi-rustic home – the draw to this lodging option is truly having the island to ourselves.
Saturday: All flights arrive to Roatan early to mid-afternoon and will be met for transfer to water taxi to Little Caye via fast French Cay Dory directly to your island home for the week.
Basing out of our island base on Little Cay, we’ll enjoy a variety of activities including:
- Morning stretching/yoga by the sea
- Exploring the reefs by snorkel out our front door
- Going on longer kayaking excursions, exploring the uninhabited Western Shoreline
- Paddling to the Pigeon Cays- which are 2 islands that make up a densely populated but very small fishing village. We’ll have time to stroll around, eat lunch, take in the sights and talk to the locals.
- Paddleboard cruising and skills sessions
- Going night snorkeling (we’ll have underwater lights)
- Marine life presentations (fish, coral, other invertebrates)
- Strokes, braces, and rescue workshops
Saturday: Dory Transfer back to Roatan and taxi to airport for return flights (all direct returns work with our schedule…we work around the airline schedule, so we have you covered. )
You can count on learning a host of new paddle skills, lots of snorkeling and learning about the coral reef, plenty of time for relaxation, and spectacular backdrop. Return home refreshed, relaxed, well-fed and with a solid set of new skills.
$2100 per person, includes transfers from Roatan. All inclusive except for alchohol.
A $500 registration is required to hold your reservation and is refundable until 30 days of departure. Balance is due 30 days before departure.
